Wood ant nests

and a birthday walk

I share my birthday with Earth Day, and yesterday’s sunshine meant I could take my daughter to see Selwyns Wood for a quick walk during her lunch break. I wanted to look for the nests of the wood ants which I’d seen on my previous visit, and having another pair of hands to supervise the dogs would be an advantage. The first one was a few paces from the car park – not a very large one, but as the sun bore down on the chipped wood, we watched the ants teeming all over it:

The other one was in the heathy area where I had seen the ants scuttling about before. This nest was smaller but just as active.

Both nests seem to be situated on top of recently coppiced or felled tree stumps…I wonder if there’s a reason for that. I found a good video all about wood ants here, in case you’re interested.
