What is Graphic Recording?
Lots of people find note-taking difficult at events, or are visual learners, or have distractions or other issues when listening to presentations. Graphic recording is a way of isolating key elements and representing them with images, metaphors, and short, clear text to convey the messages from the session.
Graphic recording can be particularly useful in the following circumstances:
- Are you running an event with lots of different speakers?
- Is your session part of a broader event?
- Are you wanting to show people outside your organisation what you do?
- Are there people in your organisation who might not be able to make an event but would benefit from the information expressed?
- Do you want complex or high level topics conveyed in a simplified and more accessible way?
- Are there people attending your event for whom English may not be their first language?
- Are neurodivergent, dyslexic, or visual learners going to be attending your talk?
Having a hand-drawn summary can amplify and enhance your message to enable a much wider audience to benefit.
My background
I spent a number of years in farming before studying Agriculture & the Environment at Wye College, and later in life I completed a Diploma in Natural Sciences with the Open University. I have kept poultry, bees, and horses, and completed a number of formal and informal courses in gardening, permaculture, biodynamics and landscape studies. My birdwatching logbooks have been designed to introduce our wonderful British birds to the general population, and I am a firm believer in art being vital for communicating some of the knottier subjects such as climate change, food security, biodiversity and rewilding. As a result, these are the subjects I am most keen to record as it’s where I have the greatest knowledge, and feel I can have the most impact.
Materials used
I work with paper, collage, and pens, and can cover a small sheet (A3), a larger flipchart (A1), or graphic boards depending on what’s required.
Fees and costings
Every event is different so there is no way to give a one-size-fits-all costing, but all my graphic recording quotes have the following:
- travel to and from the venue
- a finished map to use shortly after the event
- a cleaned-up version (PDF or jpeg) for website and socials within 24 hours
- licensing for in-house and event promotion use
- my materials
- a planning call to discuss key aspects, branding requirements, tech and event details
- a guarantee for a full refund if you’re not happy
