a seahorse

A new painting for my nekton collection!

I like how this turned out even though I found it challenging to paint. We have seahorses off the coast of Sussex, and as part of the Weald to Waves campaign the kelp forests are being restored, which are in turn helping the species of seahorse that need the fronds to support them. These tiny fish are weak swimmers, and rely on seaweed and seagrass to grip onto while they feed on plankton. Here is a Short-snouted Seahorse swimming in the shallows:
