for the Appalachian Trail
I’m coming to the end of my Birds of the A.T. project and just waiting to hear from my contact at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy about the final changes. They asked about having something on the inside back cover and I ambitiously suggested a map. I’ve always shied away from maps as the scale is so small, but I did think something image-based would be good next to the text about the ATC. With some trepidation I found an illustration of the A.T. on Pinterest and cropped, flipped, and traced it onto some watercolour paper. I also did a tiny map of the A.T. in relation to the rest of the USA. Strangely, the vastness of the geography made it easier somehow. In. keeping with the logbooks themselves, the idea is to prompt further investigation and to give an introduction. I’ve discovered that this allows a huge amount of creative licence.
Here are my maps:

I figured by the time I’d covered the top left side with the heading, that bit of Michigan and Canada wouldn’t matter quite so much…
I put them both into Photoshop so I could play around with them, and here is the result so far. I’ve sent it to Dakota to see what she thinks so hopefully she likes it – I realised I have no idea of which state is where, let alone with my wonky boundaries but once it’s suitably shrunken, I hope it will give the idea. It looks a bit like those Tudor maps of Britain with a sort of rounded bit for East Anglia and a sticky-out bit for Cornwall and a wobbly coastline with some approximate blobs for the Isles of Wight and Man etc.

What do you think?
