a wolf

I was trying to think of something autumnal for today’s Blogtober post but I got a bit sidetracked with wanting to do another animal drawing. I suppose a wolf is sufficiently spooky, although I couldn’t bring myself to do a howling at the full moon version, even though we have a glorious Super Moon tonight.

I’m enjoying fineliner and coloured pencil with these drawings as I find it really difficult to convey fur or fluff with gouache – I prefer to use that for smooth shapes with crisp edges. The pencils are great for a relaxed, unpolished finish which I think suits the texture of fur. It’s also really fun to use coloured pencils as they’re so quick to use and easy to blend.

Here is my Eurasian wolf in a snowy birch forest. Perhaps a bit wintery but I wanted the contrast!
