not just birds…

I love illustrating wildlife, and tend to use vintage field guides as my references when I can’t use my own photographs and sketches. Each species is researched before I draw, giving an authenticity sometimes lacking in other illustrations. I have been fascinated by the natural world since I was a small child, and I use my background in agriculture and ecology to inform my choice of materials and images. I have owned a smallholding, horses, and kept bees for many years, and now I enjoy creating a small but wonderful wildlife garden at my home in a busy Sussex village.
I primarily work with rewilding, conservation and environmental organisations as that is where I feel I can offer the most genuine service. I am also available for commissions.
Option 1: illustrations for identification
The birdwatching logbooks require a particular set of criteria for the illustrations, and these crisp, graphic illustrations with a plain background are perfect for when the plumage, colours, and specific attributes of the birds can be appreciated. So, if you don’t need your own birdwatching logbook, but need clear bird illustrations for identification and observation purposes within your design, particularly with your brand’s colours, imagery or typeface, this is the style for you.
Best suited for:
- ID posters
- brochures
- stand-alone images for websites or promotion
- illustrated maps
Option 2: illustrations for storytelling
For more of a storytelling approach, it’s nice to loosen up and get a bit creative. I work mainly in gouache and pencil, and I have started using granulating watercolour as backgrounds which play really nicely with the paper giving a mottled background. This makes a change from the flat and bright digital images we are so accustomed to these days. I enjoy seeing the strokes of a paintbrush and pencil marks, and if you do too, let’s discuss your project!
Best suited for:
- info boards
- data visualisation
- reports
- webinars
- call to action resources
Prices
I’m fortunate that in my line of work, no two projects are the same. I only consider submissions from organisations which chime with my values, and who are genuinely interested in making a difference to our world. I price my skills competitively but am aware that this sector is still in its infancy and budgets may not be vast, so let’s talk about how I can help amplify your cause with my artwork!
