at least I didn’t sign up for Bloganuary…
Ugh I have been laid up with a bad cold for the past week, in fact I think it might now qualify as flu. I’m always loath to call out a regular cold as flu, but it’s dragging on somewhat and I keep thinking I’m better, then realise when I challenge myself to describe in what way exactly I’m feeling better, I can’t really think of anything. I have only had one day in bed but I’m still struggling to control my cough, and I feel permanently as if I’m going to sneeze so can’t really open my eyes. I have also drenched myself in Olbas Oil which while effective, does pucker the old eyelids if I put it too near my poor chapped nose.
I have managed to decorate a wall in the lounge during my more lucid and painkillered moments, which was fun and made me feel better. I’ve also completed a few more of the Ecuador birds so I need to scan those and get them on the poster. I have also been prepping my birdwatching logbook for the Big Garden Birdwatch coming up on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th January, and made some little collage motifs to promote the event. Hopefully the weather won’t be too awful; always a problem at this time of year.

Essential kit for the BGBW:
- birdwatching logbook (Town & Country Garden Birds is the best)
- beverage of your choosing
- binoculars
- writing implement
- blanket/warm clothes to get cosy
- phone on silent
I always look forward to having an hour to spend just watching out of the window. Somehow, coming at the end of January, where the messaging is all about new year/new you, hustle hustle etc, it’s valuable to have an excuse to just sit and be still and take some time to notice what’s in the garden. My bed looks out over the front garden, so I will be perched there, seeing whether the Coal Tits and the resident Robin will take part. To be honest, even seeing nothing is still a worthwhile exercise in being quiet, and it’s still useful data for the RSPB.
I have customised my logbook ready for the birdwatch – more of that in the next post.
