I promise I’m still painting birds

I have finished the salmon painting for my daughter’s boyfriend, and this time I used the grey Khadi paper, but the same technique with the granulating watercolour and some sponged-on white gouache:

I wanted another excuse to use my Deep Sea Blue watercolour, and discovered that if you put in dates with searches for reference photos, you can limit the volume of AI slop that appears in the images; basically by applying say 1980 – 2005 will reduce the amount of ridiculousness as it’s pre-AI, and also has the benefit of highlighting photographers who can then be found individually on social media or the web.

I wanted to paint a humpback whale, but found a fantastic image of a diving sperm whale by George Karbus, an amazing wildlife photographer based in Ireland. Here is my rendition of one of his photos:

The proportions are a bit off but I’m pleased with how it came out. I just love how the opaque gouache really pings out of the watery background.
