Playing with backgrounds is so much easier when I use granulating watercolour. I really like the combination with gouache and how the separation of the pigments in the watercolour interact with the paper. I wanted to try the two new colours I’d bought, so did some drawings to experiment with them.
Here I’m using Deep Sea Blue with lots of water for the porpoise; the same paint with a little less water for the porbeagle; and the Deep Sea Black for the conger eel.

I really like the swirling effect it gives – so lovely and random against the flat matte of the gouache. I think it works well as a combination.
