in summer
It’s amazing how different it is working on large paper, while standing, and drawing using a tiny pencil held between my fingertips. And working from my imagination. And not remotely caring how it turns out.
I wanted to draw a tree. A large oak. I could see it in my mind’s eye so today I set about putting it onto paper. I’ve been struggling to paint trees that I’m happy with for a while, so this was a good chance to try something different. I used my Blackwing Pearl (equivalent to a 2-3B) stubs and worked on this throughout the day. As with yesterday’s horse, this is on A1 cartridge paper. I really like it, although I realised afterwards that there are no leaves on this tree, even though of course at the moment the landscape is at peak foliage, and the oaks are laden with acorns. Hopefully it’s going to be a mast year, and the birds will have plenty of food.
