Since having my own garden, managing it primarily for wildlife has been the only way of gardening for me, but I like initiatives like No Mow May as they give a sense of community, and it’s important to encourage people who wouldn’t ordinarily leave their lawns to grow to jump aboard. We have a lot of walkers passing our house, and I wanted to make a poster to put in the window to see how it felt doing a large illustrated piece using my new way of painting.
I drew the lettering, which always leaves me a little conflicted as I love neat typeface, and I just don’t have the patience or skill to make beautiful letters. Anyway, being very much in favour of not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good, I decided to go ahead with my scrappy attempt at script.
I didn’t plan anything, or space anything out, but I wanted to include some of my recent subjects and also to play a little with the composition.
Here is my finished poster:

The mat is A3, so it was fun to work at a larger scale.
