if in doubt, collage

BLOGANUARY 2025 DAY 17

Having felt in the creative doldrums, I challenged myself to paint something, anything, last night, and although I didn’t particularly like what I’d done, I had at least managed to achieve that small task. I woke up this morning and after writing my sorrowful morning page and maudlin (and late) blogpost while drinking my tea, I drew some ink around on the painting in the absence of knowing what else to do. I then did yoga (note to self, again: it helps) and looked again at my sketchbook. I found a circle I had cut the other day and decided to stick it on the painting. I then noticed some other bits I could collage…I love collage for breaking out of an unmotivated funk, as all the shapes and colours are done, and it’s just a question of choosing which one resonates.

a collage on a background of gouache in ochre, green and blue. Symbolising mountains, vegetation and water, with collaged women stuck on.
I love it.

I let myself have a percolator day today: allow things to sit in my head and not try and push them around too much. I realised that I have been going about my potential client contacts in the wrong way. I took notes while out on a walk – I love the voice memo function as other walkers assume you’re just talking on the phone, even though you’re talking to yourself – which helped clarify the information in my skippy and agitated brain.

I returned home to find a reply to a hello! message I had posted on a forum for Creatives for Climate from someone who had reached out, which was really nice. She then connected with me on LinkedIn, and given that I am still at the very early, tentative, circumspect, toe-dipping phase with that particular platform, made me feel almost professional! The kind offer to kick around ideas should I need to is such a help, as I really don’t have anyone else in this space that I can bounce things with and see what I’m doing, and this can mean I lose perspective, or get sidetracked with my latest greatest new idea.

That, and a couple of logbook orders, have made my day a distinct improvement on yesterday. Thank you to my Bloganuary community too! It’s so encouraging to read your posts and read your comments, I am very much appreciating the opportunity to share my January with you.
