horses

I have mentioned my love of horses before in a post and I saw a collection of the Draw 50 books on my favourite pre-loved bookstore, including one about horses. I don’t find them easy to represent on paper and I must admit, although I’m dubious about step-by-step guides, the cat one was really helpful in giving me some confidence in getting the shapes right.

I also really like the style as they remind me of The Manual of Horsemanship, the official guide of the British Horse Society and the Pony Club. Growing up as a pony-mad youngster, I am transported back to that time whenever I see the illustrations in that hallowed tome.

The Draw 50 series is by an American illustrator, and it’s a blast from the past to see all those breeds of horses that I learned when I was younger. I need to do a lot more practise but I’m enjoying giving myself these challenges and improving my skills. So, here are my sketches. I used my Blackwing Matte pencil in my Leuchtturm sketchbook.
