a giraffe in my bathroom

One of the many comments I hear during my volunteer stewarding role at Charleston Farmhouse is “I just want to go home and paint everything!” and while I don’t feel particularly inspired to paint decorative patterns on my walls, I have definitely been much more adventurous with my colours, and recently painted my bathroom a deep inky-purple, and the kitchen a bright ochre-yellow. My friend has been similarly influenced and has chosen a deep blue-black for his kitchen units, and the coordinating orange for accent, and a jazzy complimentary wallpaper to boot. As such, I have quite a lot of leftover paint and sample pots at my disposal, all from Little Greene, so I was wondering what I could use them for.

My bathroom is in the eaves of my attic room, so I have an odd-shaped door. Having recently done a session on giraffes with Wild Life Drawing (see earlier post) I realised a giraffe would fit perfectly on the back, as I didn’t want anything like fish, mermaids, or anything else traditionally watery, so I drew one out in white pencil and then got painting.

I’m really pleased with him!

The colours used are:

  • Thai Sapphire
  • Sunlight
  • Orange Aurora
  • Dock Blue (for the eye and definition lines)

The orange still looks quite pink so it might dry a slightly different colour. I’m aware it looks most authentically giraffe-ish before I added the patches but I’m certainly not going for realism!

Have you ever painted a mural, or added a decorative flourish to a door or wall?
