The row of houses behind us have had House Sparrows nesting in their eaves, and it’s been lovely to see them visiting our garden and feeders. There’s a group of half a dozen or so that flit around between the properties, and as they eat corn, have been happily feeding on our mix which contains cracked maize. I topped up the little feeder in the front garden and sat up by my window and waited to see who arrived.
There was a small commotion, and then silence, and sitting on the pavement looking around was a male Sparrowhawk with a small brown and white bird clasped in its talons. I was so surprised as although I have seen both a male and female Sparrowhawk on the Cuckoo Trail nearby, I’ve not seen them in the garden before. I felt a bit bad for the little bird but then again, at least the hawk had his breakfast – and it’s better than being predated by one of the numerous cats we have around here.
I didn’t have any space left in my current birdwatching logbook so I did a quick drawing in my sketchbook, then cut it out and stuck it over the page in the booklet.
