Drawing Mako Sharks

WITH WILD LIFE DRAWING

I’ve never felt particularly affinity for sharks, but I really enjoy these sessions and take every opportunity to tackle something I wouldn’t normally draw. We were drawing Mako sharks with info and images from The Shark Trust and I had previously watched a program on the BBC about sharks in the Bahamas, so was feeling quite confident about drawing them. My last attempts when I was at the Sea Life Centre in London and I really struggled, although those ones were swimming; photographs are definitely easier when starting out, although I find it’s helpful to watch footage too, so that my drawings don’t get static.

I did some drawings from the pack of reference images first:

I used watercolour during the session itself. I had space at the bottom of my page so did another study in gouache, which I prefer. I can’t get used to watercolour not rewetting, and I find watercolour too, well, watery a finish. It did work well with the sharks but I wasn’t a huge fan of the result.
