I woke up feeling full of a cold, so decided to relish the fact that I didn’t need to venture out, apart from walking the dog, and carry on with some gouache sketchbook explorations.
I wanted to try something colourful, and the Cornell Lab Panama Fruit Feeder Cam had some beautiful footage of an inquisitive and peckish Keel-billed Toucan, so I thought I would try a sort of hybrid of what I normally do and what I have been trying more recently, namely keep the illustration flat and 2D but add some context and background.
I enjoyed the process much more than the Jays and the Redwing as I felt a lot more in my comfort zone, so I would like to develop this a little, and tidy things up a bit and practise some backgrounds. This spread needs more leaves and trunks but it’s amazing how cluttered it looks when drawn in pencil then rather sparse once painted.
