Blogmas Day 3: Charleston Farmhouse at Christmas

The farmhouse itself at Charleston doesn’t make any particular alterations for the festive season, but there are a few lovely wintery artworks and aspects that I thought I would share with you. I was stewarding in Clive Bell’s Study this week, and spotted this beauty, Snow Scene by Edward Le Bas. This oil on board was painted in around 1950:

I love the subdued grey-green palette and sense of gloomy winter light.

The painting below, The Pond at Charleston, East Sussex, in Winter is by Duncan Grant, another oil on board, also painted in 1950. This currently hangs in Clive Bell’s bedroom at the farmhouse.

It was a quiet day for visitors as it was midweek, and the weekend had been busy thanks to the Artists & Makers Fair held at the venue. It’s a beautiful place to be, and here are some more photos I took while the room was empty:

I now have a Substack if you would like to follow along with my time at Charleston.
