Appalachian Trail Birdwatching: a unique logbook for your hike

Birds of the Appalachian Trail birdwatching logbook

The A.T. is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world at 2,190 miles in length. The Trail passes through 14 states from Maine to Georgia. It serves as a critical wildlife corridor, and draws millions of visitors and hikers each year.

I approached Dakota Jackson, Director of Visitor Engagement for the Appalachian Trail regarding a bespoke birdwatching logbook for the well-known hiking trail on the east coast. This would enable visitors to engage with the environment, and provide a way of raising funds and awareness for the numerous bird species along the route.

A whole new suite of birds needed to be painted, and research and discussion was required to ensure the text was accurate.

The logbooks are now sold on the ATC website, as well as being used to provide incentives for donors. These funds help support the valuable work that the Conservancy does to protect the people and wildlife across the length of the A.T.
