At the moment, there is a large flock of pied wagtails enjoying the insects on the arable field behind my house, and I’ve had 4 or 5 of them flitting around on my roof. Often in the summer, grey wagtails visit the river by the watermill down the lane. They are a really beautiful bird – more chunky than the pied wagtail, and the contrast between the black, white, and bright buttercup yellow is distinctive and charming. They are not as yellow as a yellow wagtail however, hence the titular ‘grey’.
I love painting birds with monochrome + high contrast colour plumage (like the brambling, for instance) as I think they look so effective in the gouache.
This painting is now sold, but I have other bird art for sale in my Etsy shop.
